Priyam Baruah

Hi! My name is Priyam Baruah and I am a 4th year student studying Molecular and Cell Biology (Immunology+Molecular Medicine emphasis) with minors in Public Policy and Bioengineering. My research experience involves engineering gene therapies across the Schaffer Lab, Bakar Labs, and Genentech! My work in the academic lab is heavily centered around characterizing noncanonical viral proteins that can be engineered in the context of oncolytic virotherapies. Outside of research, I am heavily involved with the entrepreneurial ecosystem and I’ve started ventures across edtech and healthtech through programs such as Big Ideas, NSF I Corps, Berkeley StEP and for this upcoming fall semester, Skydeck Pad-13. Outside of the lab and entrepreneurship I enjoy running and am currently training for my third half marathon. I’ve also danced for 15+ years with the last two years competing across the nation through Natya@Berkeley. Occasionally I like to try new dance forms such as Salsa and Ballroom!

I am obsessed with the brain in ways that probably warrant concern. Specifically, I care about the use cases of computational biology with neuroscience/biotech, applied to things ranging from the aging brain, neurodegeneration, gene therapies, therapeutics, neurotech, and even how we get drugs to cross the blood-brain barrier to treat things like Alzheimer's. This summer I was at MIT Lincoln Laboratory building tools to map subcortical structures implicated in consciousness and affective experience. I previously was Project Lead for two semesters in CB@B's founding cohort, leading an academic project and two subprojects with NeuroAge (building aging clocks and doing drug discovery). Beyond research, I have been dancing Bharatanatyam since I was five years old and am now competing in the collegiate desi dance circuit with Natya! I am also involved with Neurotech@Berkeley. I do Carnatic classical vocals, guitar, violin, and have a YouTube channel where I post singing covers. I like to cook, make fancy coffees with my espresso machine, hike, sew clothes, and am in love with fashion and couture! I also recently got into writing Substack articles!
